Quick Biography
Born in Papua New Guinea, Leif Sundstrup has become regarded as one of the leading Australian conductors. He has held conducting positions with both the Sydney and Melbourne symphony orchestras and has performed with most of the nation's
finest orchestras as a guest conductor.
Sundstrup was 1st prize winner in the 1996 Symphony Australia National Young Conductor Competition and has recently been appointed Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Darwin Symphony Orchestra. Sundstrup has spent the past
years as Resident Conductor of the Royal Oman
Symphony Orchestra.
He is currently Artistic Director of the National Symphony Orchestra Australia (Nso Australia), a new project incorporating live musicians and orchestral sections, multi-track recording, live internet streaming, and orchestral simulation. Nso Australia is a hybrid orchestra destined to become a valuable resource both nationally and internationly, dedicated to the promotion and performance
of orchestral compositions for film, television, broadcast,
and live performance.
Dr Sundstrup studied at the University of New England, London College of Music, and Univerity of Wollongong. He holds a Bachelor of Music (Hons) in Community Music Studies, a Master of Music in Orchestral Conducting, and a Doctor of Creative Arts in Music Composition. He studied conducting with Patrick Bailey, Noam Sheriff, Pierre Boulez, and Edo de Waart. He studied
composition with Dr Richard Mills and
Professor Stephen Ingham.
